BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED AUGUST ISSUE REVIEW
ON JACKIE KINCAID'S THIRD SOLO RECORDING
"WHERE DID YOU GO"

Jackie Kincaid has an outstanding voice, one that spans from a rich and resonant low end to a smooth and buttery upper middle. The low end generally works the beginning and the ending of phrases and the upper middle tones sort of fill in the rest. From what can be heard in the 11 tracks there is one Kincaid instrumental with an exceptional solo from banjoist Tony Wray. On this third solo release, Jackie’s’ voice never breaks, nor does it wail or strain. All told, it is not your classic traditional bluegrass voice. A solid country voice could be a more apt description. Kincaid obviously knows this and has chosen, written, and arranged the music accordingly. There are no barnburners and the only two real standards, "In The Garden" and "Gotta Travel On."

There is also a cover of the Louvin Brothers' "You'll Never Forget." Kincaid and Pat Dye wrote seven of the tracks, mostly in a blending of country and traditional bluegrass. Of them, the best are the love songs ("How I Wish You Would" and "Slowly I'm Falling") and the poignant songs of loss "That's Gone" and "Old Faded Picture". Most symbolic of what you’ll find here stylistically, is his cover of the Lefty Frezzell classic, "I Never Go Around Mirrors." Joined by pedal steel of the late John Hughey, as he is on a couple of tracks here, Kincaid's version is taken a bit slower and the words are chewed a bit more than Frezzell's, but the pathos and the power remain. If you had to choose one song from this collection that defines his vocal sound and approach, this would be the one.

Helping this solid production are Terry Eldredge, Dave Demay, Terry Smith, Andy Leftwich, and Fred Duggin, along with Wray and John Hughey.

I met Jackie Kincaid not long ago. He was performing with Larry Sparks as a Mandolin player and vocalist on a show and I was impressed with his work as what folks call a "side man". After talking with Jackie and getting to know him better I realized that this guy was much more than a "side man". Jackie is multi-talented, not only is he a great musician and singer but also a magnificent songwriter also his co-writer Miss Pat Dye. He lives his music every day which translates into heartfelt lyrics and arrangements that you hear when he performs. I always look forward to hearing Jackie Kincaid's music

Jackie Kincaid is a southern gentleman who can write and sing a great song. His vocals, mandolin, and guitar work in any combination, are stellar in person, as well as on his recordings. I was impressed the first time I heard Jackie's music. Every once in a while, an outstanding singer/artist comes along, and I regard Jackie as  one of those talented artists. He will continue to please crowds with his top notch performances. His fresh approach to our music is really pleasing to the ear!

"Jackie Kincaid Has come up with a great project here with a good selection of songs performed in a way that anyone can understand them. The harmony is great and the music is well done. To me, it's refreshing to hear some good ole, back to basics kind of music. I think you will want to hear this one over and over again as I did."

By Dan Tackett Filed under: CD Release Tagged with: Jackie Kincaid
Bluegrass veteran Jackie Kincaid has released his third solo album, “Where Did You Go.” Kincaid has been on the festival circuit for several years, and currently plays mandolin and sings tenor with Larry Sparks. The new CD has several guest pickers and singers, including Terry Eldridge of the Grascals singing harmony on the title cut. Also on board are Andy Leftwich, Dave Demay, Tony Wray, Fred Duggin and an appearance by the late John Hughey, the well-respected steel guitarist who played for several years with Vince Gill and was a member of the Time Jumpers. Hailing from Meadowbridge, W. Va., Kincaid is an IBMA member and has played the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Bluegrass Show, Prairie Home Companion Radio Show, the Wheeling Jamboree, Bill Monore’s Bean Blossom festival in Indiana and countless other venues. He has played mandolin with Mac Wiseman, Wayne Lewis, Tom Ewing, “Uncle Josh” Graves and James Monroe.

“Where Did You Go” is the third solo release for multi-talented Jackie Kincaid, and in my opinion each one released shows more of the talents and abilities of this singer, musician, and writer. Eight of the twelve songs on this CD were written by Jackie and song writng partner Pat Dye. From the nostalgic “That’s Gone” to the cover of the Billy Grammer country hit “Gotta Travel On”, there is something for everyone on this CD. All gamuts of emotions are covered, love, lost loves, hope and inspiration.

The instrumentation is provided by the great fiddle work of Andy Leftwich, the driving banjo of Tony Wray, the tasteful mandolin work by Jackie himself, all held together by the bass work of Terry Smith, long time member of the Osborne Brothers band, currently a member of The Grascals, bluegrass super band. Probably the highpoints of the CD, were the numbers which featured the great steel guitar work of the late John Hughey, long time steel player for Conway Twitty. These were the final recordings of Mr. Hughey, and as always he delivered big time. The cover of Lefty Frizzell’s “I Never Go Around Mirrors”, with the John Hughey steel, is great REAL country music, the way it used to be, vocals are shared on this one between Jackie and Dave Demay.

This is a great CD for both bluegrass and country fans, you won’t be disappointed. One of our most played recordings here in the Tri-State area. Keep it coming Jackie, the music world needs more dedicated artists like you.

Jackie Kincaid   Where Did You Go 12 Songs- Playing Time 36:42 Jackie Kincaid, from West Virginia, is a well-traveled musician having played mandolin in various top-line bands and currently a member of the Larry Sparks band. Where Did You Go marks Kincaid's third solo album, and again prominently features his solid songwriting {often partenered in that role is Miss Pat Dye} and a gritty vocal delivery that will be attractive to both bluegrass and pure country listeners. Standing out on the album include the soulful title track Where Did You Go, a mellow offering in Slowly I'm Falling, the mid- tempo That's Gone, and the hurtin' tune Old Faded Picture. Listen also for some interesting "cover' tunes by Jackie Kincaid, including thr Lefty Frizzell nugget I Never Go Around Mirrors {now deemed a country classic with many recorded versions}, a springhtly version of the Louvin Brothers' tune You'll Forget and a bluegrass flavoured re-make of the Billy Grammer country/folk hit Gotta Travel On.

Jackie Kincaid's CD "Where did you go" can be defined in one sentence, a masterful composition of work that is heartfelt and a reminder of neighbors gathered around and picking. There is nothing better than this CD of Jackie with his friends singing. This CD is what I call uplifting and fun bluegrass. You want to get up and flatfoot with every stroke of Jackie's mandolin and guitar.
