I met Jackie Kincaid through my good friend Fred Duggin whom
had known Jackie for many years. He and Fred have both been
closely linked in some way or another with Bill Monroe for
many of the years he was with us. Fred knew Bill Monroe quite
well and had the honor of playing flattop for him a time or
two along the way. There’s nothing more enjoyable than
listening to Monroe stories from those who knew him well.
I almost feel like I know the man myself. You might ask why
I go on about Monroe when talking about Jackie? Well, upon
getting to know Mr. Kincaid, I came to realize that not only
is he an extremely pleasant person to know, but he's also
no stranger to the roots of Bluegrass Music. He’s is
a very talented, well seasoned Bluegrass singer and songwriter.
Aside from being impressed by his writing, I was struck by
how his playing style is reminiscent of Bill Monroe's. But
at the same time his performance and songs are different.
His writing is honest, straightforward, from the heart, and
up to the times. Yet, he "ain't forgot where he come
from".
Jackie Lee Kincaid was a member of the “Cumberland
Highlanders TV Show”, which was seen all over the
world. He currently plays mandolin and sings tenor with Larry Sparks, 2 times IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year for 2004 and 2005. Larry Sparks has also recorded some
songs written by Jackie.
Hailing from Meadowbridge, West Virginia, Jackie is an IBMA member and has played
the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Bluegrass Show, Prairie Home Companion Radio Show, the Wheeling Jamboree, Bean Blossom, and countless other known
venues. He has played mandolin, singing harmony vocals
with the the great Mac Wiseman, Larry Sparks (IBMA Male Vocalist
of the year), Wayne Lewis (Monroe’s lead singer for
11 years), Tom Ewing (Monroe’s lead singer for 9 years),
Burkett "Uncle Josh" Graves (the father of Bluegrass
dobro & member of the Foggy Mountain Boys), James Monroe
(Bill Monroe’s son), and Clarence Kelly & New Cut
Road just to name a few. Mr. Kincaid has given opening performances
for acts like Johnny Cash, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Bobby Bare,
Ronnie Milsap, John Conley, Sonny James, and more. He has
played with some of the best pickers in Bluegrass, such as
Vick Jordon, Butch Robins, Bobby Hicks, Tater Tate, Billy
Rose, Jimmy Campbell, Kenny Baker, Fred Duggin, and the list
goes on.
While singing “Rose of Ole Kentucky” at Bill
Monroe’s Bean Blossom festival, Bill Monroe came out
and sat down on the front row and watched Jackie sing his
song. Afterwards, Bill told Wayne Lewis, "You better
keep that boy, he’s a mighty powerful Bluegrass singer”.
There’s no doubt that Jackie Kincaid has been recognized
for his singing and writing talent by some of the biggest
names in Bluegrass.
I think you're going to enjoy Jackie Kincaid's songs and
music, which were co-written with the very talented Pat Dye.
His songs are a perfect reflection of the kind of man Jackie
Kincaid is. He and his music are one in the same.
